Learning Lab: Scrivnr—Preventing Foreclosure Due to Death (Lake Harriet)
(Sponsored by Scrivnr)
At Scrivnr, we have unlocked an alternative to foreclosure when a reverse mortgage has become due and payable because of the death of the borrower. We provide an expedited process using our nationwide attorney network, and the capital to fund probate cases AND pay off the mortgage – allowing the estate to sell the property for maximum value or keep it and pass on to the heirs. The result: more efficient, equitable and humane outcomes.
Presenter:
- Byron Batres, Founder, Scrivnr, Burlington, VT
Approved for 1 CRMP Credit

Speaker Bio
Byron Batres is a Certified Financial Planner with over 23 years of experience in estate and trust settlement. Due to his personal experiences, Byron has a deep and a personal understanding of what an Executor/Administrator goes through and how to provide legal finance and technology solutions to solve probate problems.
In 2012, Byron became an executor when his wife’s grandmother passed and named him Executor and Trustee of her affairs. It was this very personal and challenging experience that inspired him to create the then world’s first DIY online probate system, EZ-Probate. Byron is proud to say that EZ-Probate helped over 5,000 families save over $45 million in legal fees. EZ-Probate was acquired in 2022.
As successful as EZ-Probate was, Byron still saw a gap that a DIY legal service could not fill. That is, “how do you help families that want, need or are required by law to have an attorney but don’t have the resources to hire one.” Byron also recognized that those same families often are facing a financial crisis, in that the main family asset faces foreclosure and they need urgent and immediate action.
From this need Scrivnr was born. Scrivnr is the first of its kind legal tech-finance company that offers financing to hire an attorney and to stop foreclosures. Scrivnr offers non-recourse capital to the estate, legal automation, and a nationwide attorney & realtor network to be able quickly solve any probate problem.
