To help our members get to know one another, NRMLA publishes periodic member spotlights featuring professionals from across the reverse mortgage ecosystem.
Meet Renee Duval, a loan officer with Bookend Lending LLC, located in Sanbornton, NH.
- Born and raised in New Hampshire, Duval has been a mortgage originator here since 1987.
- After joining Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp. in 2018, Duval was trained in reverse mortgages and started specializing in them after joining Bookend Lending.
- “Reverse mortgages are more than just loans—they’re life-changing financial tools,” says Duval. “Helping seniors make informed decisions and secure their financial future is my passion, and I am grateful to be part of an industry that makes a real difference.”
How did you get into the reverse mortgage world?
I was working at Fairway Independent Mortgage Corp. when there was a major initiative to educate loan officers on reverse mortgages. I was fortunate to train under industry leaders like Harlan Accola, Dan Hultquist, and Craig Barnes, which gave me a deep appreciation for how these loans can transform retirement planning. That experience set me on the path to specializing in reverse mortgages full-time.
What reverse mortgage issues/topics are you most focused on now?
My primary focus is on reverse mortgages for purchase (H4P). I believe too many seniors are unaware of how they can right-size into a new home while preserving assets. I always encourage those considering a refinance to also explore the benefits of H4P. To help spread awareness, I’ve developed both a one-hour and a three-hour CE course on HECM for Purchase, which I teach to REALTORS®. Educating real estate professionals is key to ensuring seniors know all their options.
Why did you become a NRMLA member?
I joined NRMLA because I value continuing education, collaboration with other reverse mortgage professionals, and staying informed on industry changes. The opportunity to connect with like-minded experts and uphold the highest professional standards is invaluable. Attending live NRMLA events allows me to grow my knowledge and enhance my practice so I can better serve my clients.
What do you consider to be your greatest career accomplishment to date?
Becoming an independent mortgage broker and getting approved by some of the top reverse mortgage lenders in the country has been a game changer. The independence allows me to offer my clients more choices and a higher level of service, ensuring they get the best possible solution for their needs. Having the support of these industry-leading lenders has made all the difference in my ability to help seniors thrive.
What is your favorite food city? Favorite meal in said city?
I have to go with New Orleans! The food scene there is unmatched. Whether it’s an oyster po’ boy, crawfish étouffée, a muffuletta from Central Grocery, or the simple joy of beignets and café au lait at Café du Monde, every bite is packed with flavor and tradition. There’s just something special about New Orleans!
