Seniors Flocked to These States in 2023

More than 338,000 Americans moved to another state to retire in 2023, according to Census Bureau data analyzed by the online moving resource, Hire a Helper.

Why it matters: This represents the fourth-largest senior migration since 2000 (2015 had the most with 417,300) and the largest since 2020.

By the numbers: Florida was the top destination for retirement movers, attracting 11% of them in 2023, followed by South Carolina (10%), New Jersey (6%) and Texas (5.8%).

  • California (18%) and New York (11%) had the highest share of retirees moving to new states.
  • Miami-Fort-Lauderdale, FL was the #1 metro destination for retirement movers (12.3%).
  • The 2023 crop of retirees on the move was significantly younger…37% of them were under the age of 65, including 23% who were under 55.
