The Employee Benefits Research Institute estimates that couples with high Medicare prescription drug expenditures will need $413,000 to have a 90 percent chance of having enough money to cover future healthcare costs.
The EBRI, a non-profit organization established in 1978 to gather research on retirement, health, and financial well-being, developed these savings targets using its projection model.
By the numbers: Males need to save $184,000 to cover future healthcare, while women will need closer to $217,000.

While the savings targets tend to be lower for Medicare Advantage enrollees relative to Medigap enrollees, there are important limitations to take into account,” says Research Associate Jason Spiegel.
